    Thor Review

After the shot of Monjir at the end of Shellhead’s lackluster sequel, I was pumped for the next film in Marvel Studios’ line-up. Maybe some of that anticipation worked against me.

The visuals on Asgard looked fantastic. From Costume Designer, Alexandra Bryne to the Cinematography (Haris Zambarloukos) and everybody at the Art Department adapting Jack Kirby’s style to the big screen really well.

Like Robert Downey Jr. before him, Chris Hemsworth owned as The God of Thunder. He absolutely nailed all the sides to Goldilocks’ personality. Sir Anthony Hopkins definitely brought his A-Game back this time around (instead of walking threw like he did in The Wolfman) as The All-Father, Odin. Tom Hiddleston was also really good in his portrayal of Loki, The God of Mischief.

There was huge controversy (even to the point of racial bigotry) regarding Idris Elba (The Losers) filling the boots of Heimdall because there aren’t Africans in both the source material and in Norse mythology. But in context of both, he’s a guardian first and fighter second. Plus his deep voice (amplified in the Sound Department) projected the character’s all-knowing-ness.

Josh Dallas (Feindall) and Jaime Alexander (Sif) both played there roles respectively. Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) makes an impression in his cameo (unlike Scarlett Johansson’s role) in Clint Barton alias Hawkeye’s shoes. The score by Patrick Doyle was very effective in the film. Most notables being Ride To Observatory, Earth To Asgard, The Banishment, and Can You See Jane?.

However, the scenes on Midgard (which also wasn’t disregarded) where the protagonist is supposed to learn humility was rushed. While there was chemistry between Hemsworth and Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), it comes across very spontaneously. Another clear example is that after another anti-climatic (Whiplash / Crimson Dynamo syndrome) battle with The Destroyer, Thunderer walks up to S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and says to consider himself an ally in their common goals to protect this world of The Nine Realms. Even though there wasn’t any follow-up to Coulson’s interrogation (especially when Thor didn’t say a word).

It was really obvious that some important moments got cut in The Editing Room. Also, the opening battle in Norway 965 A.D. and the beginning of The Odinsons bunting heads at the end suffered from severe Quick-Cuts.

As the first clip Marvel released from the film prior, Kat Dennings’ “character” was completely unnecessary. (I counted) This “bimbo” contributed nothing to the movie as a whole but spout five pop culture references (blatantly forced), one or two one-liners (really forced), and being a total snob twice while being obnoxious all the way (UGH). Exactly the “getting things wrong and not caring” mantra Kat stated in her LA Times interview. Political Science my ass.

The other two actors that made up two halfs of The Warriors Three were severely miscast. Hogun (Tadanobu Asano) didn’t come across as The Grim Mongolian, but more of the typical silent type we’ve seen in martial art films so many times and Ray Stevenson (The Ex-Punisher / Rome star) popping through the Volstagg make-up.

Overall, I liked it for what it was but the film should’ve been longer to develop certain aspects of the story. Hopefully there’s an Extended Cut on DVD.

    Rating: 8 1/2

While the after-credits scene wasn’t what I expected (like Chris Evans frozen in ice or The Shield), it still has me stoked (not just for The Avengers) for the next MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) motion picture that’s released a month after Green Lantern, Captain America (minus the subtitle).

    Second Green Lantern Preview

This is first time we get to hear some dialogue from Peter Sarsgaard (Hector Hammond), Angela Bassett (Amanda Waller), and especially Michael Clarke Duncan as the voice of Kilowog. Who lays down the rules of being in The Corps (literally and figuratively).

After the disasters that happen in this film, Waller is probably going to change her stands on aliens. But at the same time, that depends on whether or not they follow through on her comic book arc. This seems likely because the studio wants to do a Suicide Squad film. Unfortunately, it is going to be written by Justin Marks who wrote Street Fighter: The Legend of Drama Queen.

From the WonderCon footage to this, Ryan Renyolds has me convinced that he can portray Hal Jordan. He’s not a goofball when he says, “Fight it with me” in a deadly serious tone. The glimpses of the Sinestro Corps symbol and The Guardians of The Universe were pretty sweet.

My nitpick are the fire coming out of the constructs (vulcan cannon and flame thrower) not being emerald considering it’s created from the ring’s power. Parallax arriving on Earth is giving me bad Storm Cloud Galactus vibes (I sense a cop-out coming on the horizon).

Blake Lively still hasn’t convinced me that she was the right choice for Carol Ferris. She sounds like a like a total bimbo when she says, “No problem”. This is another case of contractual obligation, where the actor or actress (in this case, Blake Lively) has to appear in all forms of studio (Warner Bros. / The CW) product (Gossip Girl and The Town) like Julian McMahon starring in both Nip/Tuck and the crappy Fantastic Four movies. That’s never a good sign.

Looking back on the past candidates, Eva Green (Vesper Lynd from Casino Royale) would’ve been the ideal pick.

Zod in Man of Steel Reaction

What I think of Warner Bros. and Zack Synder rehashing The General of Krypton to be played by Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) is:

    Green Lantern WonderCon Footage

Scenes that were shown at the movie panel from this year’s San Francisco convention is online.

After that piece-of-dribble called a teaser trailer, I had little to no hope left for this movie. But I was completely blown away.

The biggest saving grace was the focus being the bigger picture and not the small one. Ryan Renyolds’ acting in the first recital of The Oath is actually genuine in context of the moment as Hal Jordan has an incredible sense of clarity washes over him (as his eyes change).

Clearly, Sony Imageworks was holding back because the visual effects are a vast improvement then previously. Mark Strong (Sinestro) never ceases to amaze. With Geoffrey Rush as the voice of Tomar-Re and the rumor floating around about Michael Clarke Duncan for Kilowog, interest came back to me.

But then again, that could all be washed down the drain with the second preview attached to Thor.

    Amy Adams is Lois Lane

Continuing the casting that’s been made, LA Times’ Hero Complex claims that the three-time Oscar nominee (also guest star from the worst episode of Season 1 of Smallville, “Craving” ) will fill the heels of The Daily Planet’s top reporter.

The 36-year-old star got the news on Sunday from director Zack Snyder, who phoned her from Paris, where he was promoting his just-opened film, “Sucker Punch.” There had been a crush of Hollywood interest in the lead female role in the Warner Bros. project but Snyder said that after meeting with Adams, she was the clear choice to take on a character that dates back to 1938 and has long represented the strong, professional woman who can hold her own against any man – even if he can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

I agree with the responses I’ve read when this news broke that she’d make a better Lana Lang (considering she’s a natural redhead) then Ms. Lane. But first and foremost, if there’s no chemistry between her and Cavill then the whole Lois & Clark dynamic doesn’t work.

Overall, I don’t mind this choice as long as Lois has a balancing attitude and doesn’t become too bitchy (Superman’s Failure) or clueless (All-Star Superman), I’ll be happy.

    Captain America Teaser

After false reports and teaser clips, the full preview is here.

So far, Chris Evans seems to be channeling Steve Rogers’ personal drive to serve the U.S.A. despite his “size” well but I still need to see him acting in the suit in the second preview for to me to be completely sold. While the frail effect works in some scenes (the alley and platoon lined up), it’s still glaringly obvious in others.

Tommy Lee Jones had previous experience with (Nick Fury himself) Sam Jackson in Rules of Engagement, so he knows how to play a military officer. Liked the “sending Hitler to Hell” line, but Tucci’s speech about power in the positive way beats it as the best quote.

A minor nitpick, did the editors at the studios’ marketing team really have to tribble flash the reveal of The Red Skull under the Hugo Weaving mask (which Johann Schmidt would love to wear that face) despite the EW exclusive photo?

    Wonder Woman Costume Reaction

    Kevin Costner as Pa Kent

On the heels of Cavill portraying The Man of Tomorrow announcement, Deadline confirms the role Mr. Dances With Wolves will be playing is Kal-El’s adopted father.

Almost a month after Deadline revealed that Kevin Costner was in early talks for a lead role in Superman: Man of Steel, I hear that he has closed a deal to play Jonathan Kent, the adoptive dad of Clark Kent. Costner will join Henry Cavill, who is playing the title role, and Diane Lane, who is playing Martha Kent, his adopted mother.

Costner definitely has more then enough credits. Said movie, The Untouchables, Field of Dreams, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and JFK (minus Waterworld and The Postman). On a sidenote, his band, Modern West did a song called “Superman 14”, which it’s quite good.

He can nail the farmer from Smallville, Kansas. Even though I’m ready to move on once the TV show ends, I prefer The Kents being hands on parents instead of grandparents.

Smallville Noir: A Lois & Clark Charade

I’ve been wanting to make this music video since I re-listened to past-Lex Luthor (aka Gene Hackman II in Singer’s Homage), Kevin Spacy’s singing as Bobby Darin from the Beyond The Sea soundtrack. But after months of technical difficulties, I got it done.

    Song: Kevin Spacy – “Charade”

THIS IS A NON-PROFIT VIDEO MADE PURELY FOR FUN.

    Second Thor Trailer

Unlike Cap’s Superbowl TV spot, Goldilocks’ did nothing for me. But this totally makes up for that.

Hemsworth displays the right amount of arrogance before learning some humility. Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Anthony Hopkins seem to portray their respective characters. However, Stellan Skarsgard’s (father to Alexander of True Blood who was in the running to play Odinson) Professor Hawkins, Sif (Jaime Alexander), and The Warriors Three (Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, and Tadanobu Asano) haven’t said a single word yet in these previews, hopefully in the final one.

While the taser bit was humorous, I’m growing a little skeptical about Kat Dennings as Jane Foster’s “gnome helper” (described by the actress), Darcy (a made up character for the movie). This could turn into another Chloe Sullvian / Max Gibson (Batman Beyond) scenario all over again. Because outside of Marvel Studios‘ films, females in comic book movies haven’t been all that great (Katie Holmes / Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Rachel Dawnes not withstanding).

But so far, they’ve been on a roll with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts (despite Iron Man 2 being disappointing and Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow being miscast), and Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross (unlike Jennifer Connelly was way too vulnerable and didn’t stand up to her five star father).
