    2012 in Review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

    Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 2,900 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 5 years to get that many views.

Star Trek 2 Teaser Trailer – The Japanese Version

While I’m eagerly awaiting the second Man of Steel preview next week, today is a first look at the darkest point for the crew of the USS Enterprise. The international form has a little bit more at the end.

JJ Abrams has said the villain was going to be a “one man weapon of mass destruction”. Speculation is that it could be Captain Kirk’s old Psionic friend, Gary Mitchell. I’m confident Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) will be a hundred times better then Eric Bana (the poor man’s Kahn).

What makes it more evident it’s Mitchell, Alice Eve (She’s Out of My League) is Dr. Elizabeth Dehner. The similarities between her and Sally Kellerman (the first season’s episode: “Where No Man Has Gone Before”) are almost uncanny:

At first I thought maybe it was Nurse Chapell, since Bones played by character actor, Karl Urban (see Dredd) called her during that hilarious moment where Kirk got the allergic reaction McCoy’s vaccine in the first film. Definitely not Yeoman Rand (but that’s just wishful thinking) since she’s a red shirt (and we all know what happens to the red shirts) not blue. So Kirk is not getting any (since their love was obvious, even though Grace Lee Whitney was only in one year). But it’s as I said above.

The last shot looks like a reverse Wrath of Kahn death scene. Even though Zachary Quinto said in an interview he was done with acting after this sequel, It would be a crime to kill off Spock after just one movie. Also it just reeks of rehashing. So Kirk might bite the dust or fake it as he doesn’t believe in no win scenarios.

Second Man of Steel Teaser Poster

    https://i0.wp.com/cdn-static.denofgeek.com/sites/denofgeek/files/styles/article_main_half/public/man_of_steel_lead_0.jpg

With Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit out next Friday, marketing for next year’s big movies are starting to kick off. Most notably Star Trek 2 (or Into Darkness as they call it) and Superman’s reboot.

A new image was an unlockable easter egg on The Dork Knight Declines‘ Blu-ray and DVD.

I’ve been on the fence with this movie. After the pitiful closing of his Batman franchise, I didn’t trust Chris Nolan anymore. However, he recently said in an interview:

“Superman is a completely different character than Batman. So you can’t in anyway use the same template”.

So he seems to understand the differences in character. I understand that Clark Kent (that is if he is the character and not the mask again) is trying to find his place and obviously the U.S. government doesn’t trust him once he dons the cape, but one of my many biggest fears it’s going to be way too overdramatic like the misfired Hulk film. General Zod (Michael Shannon) and Ursa/Faora (Antje Traue) again, the Superman II rehash cloud is still lingering over this.

The trailer implies that once The Last Son of Krypton (please no other relations in future sequels) starts proving himself to the world, things slowly get brighter. If that’s the case, then I’m all on board.

Lastly, instead of throwing out Justice League for the sole purpose to grab Avengers money, Warner Bros. should just do World’s Finest instead:

But no, they rather tease us with a stupid cameo in I Am Legend.

The Flash: “Shroud of Death” in 5 Seconds

I was re-watching episodes of the 90’s Flash TV series on YouTube a few weeks ago and this one reminded me how clueless Julio Mendez (played by Alex Desert) was in the scenario.

Updates – Dark Knight Rises Sucked!

The progress has been slow with my Werefoo project, but that’s the name of the game with filmmaking.

Anyway, here’s my initial thoughts about the movies I’ve seen the past few months. I loved Avengers, liked Amazing Spider-Man (despite some rehashing from the first Riami film), enjoyed Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (in spite of Fixed News shamelessly plugging themselves at the very end), but I was severely underwhelmed with The Dark Knight Rises.

To start, Nolan and company actually had a line of dialogue equivalent to the infamous excuse to anybody that (“gasp”) points out the problem with Batman’s illogical abilities, actions, or motivations to get out of a scenario. Clearly, your company is bias with this overrated character for the last four years.

The obnoxious inter-cutting scenes from the previous films, hammering in the picture of the annoying non-existent love interest, Tom Hardy’s over-flamboyant performance as Ubu (not Bane, those lying SOBs) which built up to Talia Al Ghul’s short-lived moments on-screen before hitting-the-bucket in the anti-climax being all the notable pieces that made this Jenga come falling down.

But just in general, I’m sick and tired of The Caped Crusader being front-and-center in all of media. I’m really crossing my fingers that the first hero, Superman makes a triumphant comeback to the big screen with Man of Steel:

Because if this is another dud that Warner Bros. throws out, I’m done with their level of stupidity. Marvel continue to own them every year.

    Updates

As you’ve noticed, I haven’t made any new posts since the new year. Aside from working out, my job, and DC Universe Online, mainly because of an Arizona Green Tea spill on my Toshiba laptop. But I managed to buy another one.

I took a break from blogging to pursue my other interests like screenwriting. I’m currently working on a first draft for a horror movie called, “Werefoo of China” on Plotbot, which is the Facebook for screenwriters.

My favorite monster is The Lycanthrope. Man transforming into animal, the inner beast, etc. I’m using the original Wolf Man (there is no remake) and American Werewolf in London (this image still gives me the creeps) for references. I’m also planing on making a production diary.

Speaking of remakes, I saw Fright Night. Considering branding is really big in Hollywood right now and (having found this out right now) Craig Gillespie directed the notorious Mr. Woodcock, I expected pure bullcrap. But for once in a very long time since Cronenberg’s The Fly and Carpenter’s The Thing, it was actually a new version done right.

Unlike Nightmare on Elm Street (where they brought the implication that Freddy Krueger was a pedifile to the forefront, hired a music video director, and completely disregard the character’s mythology for mindless slashing), Tom Holland (director of the 1985 original) was involved with the story along with Marti Noxon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) penning the script. So, It’s the best of both worlds.

But outside of the performances of Roddy McDowall (voice of Mad Hatter from Batman: The Animated Series) and Chris Sarandon (who makes a cameo appearance in the new one), it doesn’t have much rewatchablity. I do find Evil Ed (played by Stephen Geoffreys) obnoxious, McGlovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) is passable.

But all that aside, this doesn’t mean the website is done for. It’s just on hiatus for now.

    Second Dark Knight Rises Preview

Since Chris Nolan has said this takes place eight years after the previous film, implies an amalgam of Dark Knight Returns, Knightfall, and No Man’s Land.

Not to jump to conclusions, but it seems to me Tom Hardy was born to play this role. His performances of a brute in Bronson and intellectual from Star Trek: Nemesis being the stepping stones for this collimation. I didn’t have a problem with the synthesized voice (accept for The Prologue):

“When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die.”

    Best Line Ever.

I’m sold on Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Hopefully Selina Kyle is more socialite then prostitute (considering the sexism going on in the abysmal New 52). While Nolan stated over and over again that Robin was never going to be in this franchise, there’s Easter eggs here that say otherwise.

The R on the crowd sign is Tim Drake’s logo. The name on the receiver’s jersey after the entire field is leveled says Ward (as in Burt Ward, ugh). Joseph Gordon Levitt’s character (John Blake, yeah right) might turn out to be Tim (since that’s the one featured in Arkham City, not a coincidence) or another substitute like Gerard Stephens and Ramirez were for Harvey Bullock in addition, Rene Montoya.

Wasn’t sure about Marion Cotillard playing the possible Talia Al Ghul (or Miranda Tate, whatever you want to call her), until I found out later she was “Loony” Mal (Inception). So she can do the accent no sweat. Too bad she’s not sporting the femme fatale look in the set pictures that came out prior.

The Batplane looks like something out of a Terminator film (how ironic). They’ve definitely crossed over into the Scifi realm (not that the groundwork was already there). Which I suspect is what Warner Bros. might do in the reboot (just not another Burton / Schmacher effect).

My only fear is another case of Spider-Man 3 Syndrome, where they go back to the origin and add to it. Unfortunately, this interpretation of Batman isn’t fluent in world languages (that bit of Mandarin in Begins out the window) like his comic counterpart.
